I’m having an upper scope done today to look and see if I have any ulcers or issues. This means I’ve been NPO (“nothing by mouth”) since midnight and am one hangry lady. To battle my hunger, I decided I’ll make a post about what I’ve had brewing in my head for a while but just have not gotten around to. This post is all about a special community that has wrapped its arms around me through this: the greyhound community.
What is the greyhound community you may ask? Well, it’s a borderline cult of people who own greyhounds in the greater Omaha area. When I say “cult,” I truly mean it. There is a Facebook group, merchandize and outings. I may have even joined a greyhound girl gang. Below you’ll find a collection of just a few greyhounds who’s humans have gone above and beyond for me. I hope you enjoy!
This is Mister Perfect. He has a greyhound sister named Katie, but it’s hard to find a picture of them together. Most likely because Katie is a very snarky old lady. She knows what she wants and what she doesn’t, which is often Mister. Mister’s mom Emily has been my limo driver to chemo every week. EVERY SINGLE WEEK, for 16 weeks total when it’s all said and done. Emily has drove across town to take me to chemo. Some days it was the only thing that got me out of bed and going. I’ve loved our morning drives and am forever grateful to her.
This toothy boy is Lupin. He is actually Laura’s grand dog. When Laura found out about my diagnosis, she sprung into action! She became an original Warrior. She sent me loads of fun leggings and my first breast cancer gear. But more importantly, she has sent me a card every single week. They are often silly and bring a smile to my face. I need those physical reminders that I have a community behind me.
While Diva here may not appreciate the finer things in life, her mother Jenna does. Jenna is a fellow sorority sister who also had breast cancer and a greyhound! Jenna and I have become fast friends bonding over the trauma that is breast cancer and the love that is greyhounds. She has been a guiding light and resource for me. She gets me out of the house and when I’m not up to it she just checks in to make sure I’m hanging in there. I know we will be friends for a long time.
This is Marley. Marley shares a home with Peach. Marley’s mom Karen has been a huge supporter for me. She has not only sent numerous things from our wish list, but has been pivotal in making sure I have fresh flowers on the table every week. The daily reminder of beauty keeps me searching for beauty in this strange and terrible experience.
This is Skye. Skye is working to become a therapy dog, but that’s not why she’s here. Her mom Jane is another sorority sister and one of the first I met on this journey. She helped me navigate those early days of being newly diagnosed. Her and her husband also helped us navigate our insurance issues and were so patient teaching us over zoom calls and emails everything we needed to know. They single-handedly saved us thousands of dollars asking for and accepting nothing in return. Just a simple request to pay it forward.
These are just a few of the dogs whose hoomans have gone above and beyond in helping me. I could go on for days but I do have that pesky little scope to get to. I hope you enjoyed the dogs, Warriors.
Such a super great support group.
What can I say but thank you for the shout out. Greyhound owners are a very special group of people. Not only to they care so much about the hounds, but they are great people. I think the hounds pick their owners. Not the owners picking the hound. There is a spiritual connection between them. I have never actually met J J. Followed on Omaha Greyhound Facebook page. Met a lot of Omaha people when taking foster hounds from Des Moines to the race track to meet and greet. In this internet age I still prefer to snail mail real cards. It’s a small jester, but everyone enjoys the cards. Maybe I will start having Lily and Lupin send the cards!! They could lick the envelopes.
Remember, stay positive and laugh a lot.
Beautiful people. This just makes my heart get bigger. You’re so blessed with these people, Julia! ❤️
This is a very heart warming post. Thank you for taking time to recognize this amazing community who have stepped up! You have amazing warriors!!
What truly lovely ladies and gents you have surrounding you,—in front, beside, and behind. The girlfriends are nice too! ????.
You are an extraordinary young woman, Julia. The fact that you have such a dedicated and loving fellowship of family and friends proves it. This is “payback” time TO you. It’s usually easier to give than to receive, but you have found a way to receive. Your gracious acceptance is a part of the cycle of friendship and love. Your praise of those who drive you, clothe you, talk with you, cry with you, and all of the other little and big things that your loved ones do for you rewards the givers many times over— first in the joy of giving, and secondly in hearing how much they mean to you and finally in knowing that this is what life is all about—loving.
I admire you, Julia. You’ve really got it together!
Awww, thanks for the shout out. 🙂 For me, it’s just paying it forward. So many people reached out to help when I was going through chemo. Cancer sucks. I’m glad you have a great support system to help you through it. 🙂
